I’ve always been drawn to the idea of camping, but to be honest, the prospect of sleeping on the ground in a traditional tent, didn’t quite align with my comfort zone. But in my desire to have a personal haven with outdoor adventures, I decided to give it a go.
I started my camping experience in a very small tent and after the first night seeing all the stars and hearing coyotes howl in the distance, I was hooked, never mind that I woke up with a sore back. Over time, I upgraded to bigger tents and more comfortable sleeping bags, until I once saw a pop-up camper and thought I absolutely had to have one. So while I still enjoy tent camping from time to time, a pop-up camper has been the perfect compromise, a very comfortable shelter while preserving the authentic outdoor experience. Some may call this glamping, I totally agree!
Let me start by saying that it was very hard to find an affordable pop up camper that was in good shape and not requiring much work. Luckily, a family member decided to part ways with theirs, a 2002 Fleetwood Coleman Tacoma to upgrade to an RV. I knew that this was my best opportunity and I had to get it. The pop up was in decent shape but needed some work. I wanted to do some remodeling to refresh the interior and make it our own. Our pop-up has two king sized beds, a small slide out bed, a kitchenette with stove and sink, portable dinette table, a hutch with built in refrigerator, heater, and lots of seating area. It is a little bigger than I expected, it is very easy to haul with my car and super set up.
The process of remodeling the pop-up camper proved to be a sometimes very frustrating but an extremely rewarding adventure that not only transformed the camper itself but also reshaped my perspective on DIY projects and outdoor accommodations. It was a journey that combined the thrill of outdoor exploration with the satisfaction of mastering a few new skills while practicing lots of lots of patience as I learned to use new tools and materials, some which I had never heard of.
Over time, the camper's transformation became a reflection of our personalities and I felt a deeper connection to the outdoors as I envisioned all of our adventures and memories to be created from the places we visit. In the end, our camper became a tangible representation of my growth as a an outdoor and do-it yourself enthusiast. A journey I wouldn’t trade for anything.
