Disclaimer; I didn't like hiking the first time I tried it! Yep, I said it, I was not a fan. My best friend introduced me to hiking and that first hike was brutal. It was a hot day, the hike itself was difficult and seemed like never-ending. I thought, who in their right minds does this for fun? Little did I know that in the years to come, hiking would become one of my biggest obsessions and the main outlet for my mental health and physical wellbeing.
As a social worker, I learned about various therapeutic modalities and the (lack of) resources available for overall mental health. Most of the people that I worked with came from lower-socioeconomic communities who often faced significant barriers when it comes to accessing therapy. Therapy sessions can be expensive, even with insurance, as copayments and deductibles these are often a burden.
In addition, many individuals from lower socio-economic communities may not have adequate health insurance or any insurance at all, further limiting their options for affordable therapy. On top of all this, transportation and time constraints can make it difficult for people in these communities to attend regular therapy sessions, as they may have multiple jobs or family responsibilities that make it challenging to prioritize their mental health. These barriers to mental health care are exacerbated with a stigma surrounding mental health and therapy, both can discourage individuals from seeking help.
While i do not recommend the outdoors as a sole therapeutic intervention, it is a powerful alternative to traditional indoor therapy. The importance of spending time outdoors for mental, emotional and physical wellbeing cannot be overstated. Below are some of the most important benefits the outdoors offer for mental health, all of which I have personally benefitted from.
Natural Stress and Anxiety Reduction
Nature offers a sanctuary of calm and serenity which can reduce both stress and anxiety. When we step outside and immerse ourselves in the natural world, we connect with something greater than ourselves, allowing us to gain perspective on our worries and stressors. Research consistently shows that spending time in the outdoors reduces stress, anxiety, and depression while also providing a boost in mood and cognitive function.
Reduce Mental Health Stigma
I mentioned earlier about how traditional therapy can be intimidating and out of reach for some individuals. Outdoor therapy provides a less formal and more appropriate setting making it easier for people to seek help without the worries of feeling judged or stigmatized. Have you heard of Outdoor Group Therapy? The outdoors create an empathetic supportive great for personal growth.
Mindfulness and Personal Reflection
Have you ever been in a hike to a place that takes your breath away? Yep, the beauty of the outdoors will do that. The grandiosity of nature can evoke feelings of awe and wonder shifting our perspectives and making us more receptive for self discovery. In addition, nature provides a beautiful natural backdrop and rich sensory experience perfect for meditation and introspection. This helps individuals focus on the here and now, gain clarity and perspective on their thoughts and emotions.
A Space for Peace and Solitude
I often seek the outdoors for this exact reason. The outdoors offer more opportunities for solitude and privacy, both essential for deep personal reflection. Being alone in the outdoors without distractions from social interactions allows us to contemplate our thoughts and emotions. Check out my tips for hiking solo and staying safe
Freedom from Expectations
Being in the outdoors brings a feeling of freedom from the usual societal expectations and pressures. This is a space in which you don't need to conform to a particular role or persona. This creates a perfect opportunity for self exploration and a deeper understanding of your true self.
The benefits of the outdoors for mental health are undeniable. This is a space that provides a therapeutic sanctuary that promotes mindfulness, reduces stress, encourages self-reflection, and offers a sense of connection to both the natural world and our inner selves. Whether through the calming sounds of a forest, the simplicity of a mountain trail, or the awe-inspiring beauty of the desert, the variety of natural settings offers a profound and accessible means to improve mental well-being.
I encourage you to embrace the healing powers of the outdoors, it may lead you to a healthier more balanced and resilient mind making it an invaluable resource for maintaining and enhancing your mental health.
